Dear students, welcome to the Department of Statistics.
Our department was established in 1985 as the seventh department of Ege University Faculty of Science to train statisticians who can collect, analyze, test and interpret data using versatile research methods and researchers who can publish their research in international journals. In the 1987-1988 academic year, he started his undergraduate education. Education - Teaching is carried out in a way that at least 30% of the courses are in English. Approximately 550 students in the department; It is trained by a 16-person scientific staff including 2 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 2 Doctor Instructors, 1 Lecturers and 5 Research Assistants.
Statistics; It analyzes scientific technical developments, the application of new techniques and technology, the improvement of production quality and the events developing in the society by using versatile research methods. In recent years, popular topics such as big data and data mining have come to the fore in many different sectors, and the importance of statistics has been understood once again and the need for statisticians has increased in this sense. Statisticians deal with numerical information (data) beyond definition; They search for the origin and accuracy of the data and try to understand it. Therefore, the aim of the statistician is not only to collect, analyze, present and interpret meaningful data, but also to deal with big data, to reveal and model the complex relationships in the data and to take critical roles in the future plans with the inferences made.
The aim of the statistics education program is to train well-equipped statisticians who use the computer as a tool. Computers are the greatest assistant of the statistician in solving problems and computer laboratories are used extensively to support the lessons. Apart from the theoretical and applied statistics, they can take courses such as the "elective courses" included in the program, especially from the fifth semester, and the introduction of statistical software, computer programming languages, biostatistics, quality control, operations research, economics, and accounting. While preparing the curriculum, attention was paid to ensure that the courses were designed to enhance personal development, skills and professional competence, and were prepared in line with current technology and developments. In this context, elective courses in which the R programming language is used or engineering-based topics such as system reliability have been included in our program in recent years.
Graduates can work in the analysis planning units of institutions, in insurance companies, in the quality control units of industries, in production control and technology development stages, in the stage of experimentation in the agricultural sector, in banks, computer programming companies, and in the health sector. Thus, a statistician's Ministry of Science, Industry and Trade, where numerical evaluations are made, Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), Employment and Employment Agency, etc. institutions as well as in the private sector. Some of the areas where statistical methodology is widely applied are; health and medical sciences, agriculture, biology, business, economics, actuarial, education, engineering, psychology, quality control and social sciences.
We invite you to explore our website to learn more about all the possibilities offered by our Department. We would like to shape your future together at Ege University.
