Department Introduction and Research Areas

Presentation of the Department of Statistics

Faculty of Science, Ege University

The Department of Statistics was established in 1985 as the seventh department of the Faculty of Science at Ege University and started its undergraduate education in 1987-1988 academic year. Mission of the Department of Statistics is to raise respectable statistical staff who have scientific skepticism principle and who are able to produce a solution to the problem and to use interdisciplinary studies, to use information technologies effectively,  having an analytical thinking skills and professional ethics and responsibility. In parallel with the vision of our university and our faculty, our vision is being a respected and recognized Department of Statistics in international platforms with the help of qualified scientific studies conducted under the roof of our department and quality of education.

Statistics analyzes the scientific-technical developments, the application of new techniques and technology, the improvement of production quality, and the events taking place in society by using miscellaneous research methods. In addition, the aim of the statistician is not only to collect, analyze, present and interpret meaningful data, but also to deal with big data, to reveal and model the complex relationships in the data and to take critical roles in the future plans to make inferences.

The education plan offered to our students in our department is organized as at least 30% of the courses are given in English. It is among our department goals to train statisticians who keep up with the ever-changing age, have a good command of technological developments and can use current statistical methods competently. Computers are the biggest tools of the statisticians in solving problems. Therefore, computer laboratories are used extensively to support the lessons. Apart from the theoretical and applied statistics knowledge, especially from the fifth semester, students can choose the "elective courses" in the program, depending on their interest, such as the statistical softwares, computer programming languages (R programming, C++), biostatistics, algorithm design, simulation, modeling and optimization, quality control, operations. They can also take some courses such as research methos, economics and accounting. Programs such as Matlab, Minitab, Spss, Office programs are mainly used in the courses. While preparing the curriculum, attention was paid to ensure that the courses were designed to enhance personal development, skills and professional competence, and were prepared in parallel with the current technology and developments. In this context, elective courses in which the R programming language is used or engineering-based topics such as system reliability have been included in our program in recent years.

Graduates can work in the analysis planning units of institutions, in insurance companies, in the quality control units of industries, in production control and technology development stages, in the stage of experimentation in the agricultural sector, in banks, in computer programming companies, in the health sector. Thus, a statistician can be employed in the private sectors as well as in institutions such as the Ministry of Science, Industry and Trade, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), the Employment Agency, etc., where numerical evaluations are made. Some of the areas where statistical methodology is widely applied are; health and medical sciences, agriculture, biology, business, economics, actuarial, education, engineering, psychology, quality control and social sciences.

About 550 students in the department; 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, 1 lecturer and 5 research assistants. The research fields of the professors in the Department are given below:
